GIS Analyst – Geology, Mineral Resources

Job Description:

  • Support USGS’s ongoing resource investigations across the Western United States
  • Georeference historic geologic maps and extract previously undigitized data
  • Evaluate mineral occurrence information from technical reports and interpret satellite imagery
  • Build geospatial databases and create publication-quality maps and figures for USGS scientific products
  • Collaborate with geologists, geophysicists, and GIS professionals to provide accurate geospatial data

Requirements:

  • Must have the ability to receive / maintain a favorable adjudicated Public Trust investigation (US Citizen or Lawful Permanent Resident for at least 3 years)
  • Bachelor’s Degree + 6 years / 10+ years of relevant experience
  • Strong proficiency with ArcGIS to support geologic and mineral-resource investigations
  • Expertise in georeferencing and spatial data development, including digitizing geologic maps
  • Strong geologic interpretation skills, including identifying lithology, mineralization, geologic age, structural features, and mineral occurrences from maps and imagery
  • Experience developing geologic and mineral-resource database using scientific literature
  • Experience using aerial and satellite imagery to identify and document geologic features
  • Ability to produce publication-quality geosciences products, including maps and technical illustrations
  • Experience creating Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) compliant metadata for geospatial datasets
  • Proficiency with ArcGIS Pro, Spatial Analyst, Geostatistical Analyst, Image Analyst, Microsoft Office (particularly Excel), Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe Acrobat
